FFA and FCCLA Join Together in Educating 3rd Graders at Farm City Day

Farm City is a day where all third graders in Cherokee County are educated on the basics of agricultural life and how the process “from farm to fork” actually works. Recently, the annual event took place.

Third graders attending Cherokee County schools gathered at Sand Rock high school and were taught the basics of agriculture life by FFA and FCCLA members from the same schools around Cherokee County.

When asked about how Farm City Day comes into effect Kelsey Higgins claims, “We are assisted by the farmers federation and they help us with stations such as, live stock, poultry, and greenhouse and nursery.”

The Cedar Bluff FFA maintained a raised bed for planting seed to teach the kids how seeds are planted in a greenhouse, while Cedar Bluff FCCLA taught the kids about seeds and the carrot. “Farm City helps us better educate these children on how it goes from seed, to farm, and then to their fork. It showed these children the process and where the food they consume is really coming from.” Kelsey Higgins stated.

“Farm City, a state wide event that teaches the members attending Farm City Day the responsibility and educates them, along with the elementary kids, because they have to learn and memorize their lines. Therefore, they educate themselves along with the third graders.” Cedar Bluff FFA teacher, Brittany Hill said.

Cullman McDaniel, Freshman and new FFA member, has professed his gratitude for this even and expresses that he is prepared to maintain this task and educate the children about what Farm City is actually about.

“I would like to be more educated on agriculture and teach these kids things about farming, things I didn’t know about.” Cullman has stated.

“FFA is a great time for everyone, I hope to encourage kids to join FFA because it is a great time year round and gives you an atmosphere and an outlet to find your place and people” Cullman stated.

Farm City Day is a way to educate the children in our county about the importance of agriculture and knowing where the food you consume everyday come from. Farm City for the most part is simply about education and it shows everyone that agriculture is all around us and we must take pride in how our country prospers in it.
